Today's Writing Prompt:
You have the power to heal through a single body part. What part is it? Is it magic? Applied science? Part of a strange alien genetics? How do you decide who gets healed?
I'd love to say that this weekend has been productive on a writing front, but I'm behind. According to my nano word count about 8,000 words behind after today. Of course, I still have about 5 pages to type up with the various auto-editing that seems to create for me. Thankfully while I shouldn't be editing at all, mostly I'm adding.
When I write, if I want to add something or feel like I've forgotten something I just put a little note in the margins of the page with either an arrow or a little star for where I want it to go. Sometimes it is just a note to remember to describe someone before introducing them or that I might want to finish dressing the character before having them go outside rather than assuming they remembered their car keys. When I'm typing the page up, I add those bits in if I notice them.
I don't know how other people do it, but I think I'm going to need post it notes for this story. Little things like recording the different character descriptions in one place or naming the multiple places that my main character works and volunteers at saves me a lot of time. If I cannot remember what I named something I either draw a line underneath (sometimes with a letter, which makes me feel very Russian authoresque) or I flip through the entire story to find out what I named it the first time. It's time consuming and I hate those inconsistencies when I'm reading a story even though they are not necessarily the author's fault. If I read something and wonder, "I thought she was wearing a green dress" I will flip back in the book to check. My mind catches on little details, and too many inconsistencies in either story content or even typos and layout errors can jar me from a mediocre story.
Of course, if the story is good enough, nothing brings me out of the bubble. I think the building could be burning around me and I might not notice it.
I've been up since 4:30, but I have not written anything. Instead, I cleared off the desk we have put up on free cycle so we can take more pictures of it without my knitting blocking all over the place. I have more smut to write, so hopefully I can get that finished today and find my way back to plot.
