Checking in!

I have 2 more days of rehearsals before the show opens. What show? The Mikado opens Friday. Neither here nor there, but it does mean that I am not doing as much knitting as I would like.

I was checking in the morning papers today when an ad fell out of one of them (probably the Financial Times). It was about the second best ad I could have hoped to see. Heifer International! Now I have this urge to combine my pennies into a llama for a Bolivian family. Or maybe some honeybees for a impoverished family in Kentucky. Maybe even tree seedlings to prevent erosion in Tanzania. I am not sure how successful the program is, but it sounds really neat!

Warm hands

A couple of weeks ago I was at Circles, and I bought some Brown Sheep Handpaint in English Garden. It was a beautiful colorway, vibrant with a great mix of purply-blues and flaming oranges. I knew I wanted to make the fingerless wrist warmers that one can find all over the web. I bought Alison's pattern at the store and started them only a little later.

I finished them this week. I took no pictures. They are cute, but the lace pattern is almost completely lost in the fuzziness of the mohair content, fuzziness that only seemed to increase while I blocked them. I wore them to work on Monday and left them at the office. Their intended function after all was to keep my hands warm working at the computer. But they were too big.

While I didn't check the gauge, I was pretty sure I was spot on. It fit when I adjusted it around my hand to check. However, my hands are narrow and long. Last night at rehearsal I gave them away to my friend, who was acting as our rehearsal pianist and they fit her perfectly. Next time, a pattern with more ribbing and less lace.
