This morning's first walk (as opposed to when I walk to the train later this morning) was a blissful break in the rain. Of course, we are supposed to have rain or snow all the way through the weekend and possibly into next week. It's a good thing I don't melt.
Norma posted about getting seeds, which reminded me that I really needed to order my plants for this year. Eventually, I would like to be mostly self-sufficient for some of the basic vegetables that I use all of the time: onions, tomatoes, bell peppers, kitchen herbs, and summer fruits. Of course, if I could find room for potatoes, asparagus and other delicious vegetables that would be excellent. It's all baby steps.
Last year I grew tomatoes (successfully after a fashion), peppers, and tomatillos. I also had swiss chard that never really came up, corn (what was I thinking), pumpkins (umm, they flowered and that was it) and a random potato that I shoved into the ground. This year I am adding onions and shallots, blueberries and strawberries, and pattypan. Even if only a few of these items work, I will be happy. So, remind me of that when I have killed almost all of the plants! Gardening is an excuse to go outside for something other than exercise.
Tonight is a long night. The women's long program means I am going to be up until at least 11! For someone who wakes near dawn or predawn, that is a huge difference!
